Window Cubby Hole Area...

Currently in development is the extrusion from the main corridor to the window which has an interesting transition between them.

Below are some development shots with Sam's recent texture work:

Materials need a lot of work, the brick tiling on the frame transition between window cubby hole and corridor needs tuning.

Next up will be the completion and tidying of the whole window area.

Capital done.

Yep, after an extremely long battle with smoothing group artefacts and tangent normal baking we finally have a low poly base with clean normals...

Decided to keep it clean for construction as we can add variation towards the end of the project when we actually have a cathedral.

Low Poly Capital w/ Wires.

UDK Test.

The verdict is, they will look seamless with the environment when we get to material finalising (detail maps etc).

Next up, modular window section creation!

Capital Development!

Grrr... Annoying session this time. After creating a high poly mesh inspired by Jack's concept sketches I have had numerous problems getting a final bake effect I like so alas I plan to finalise it tomorrow!

Here are some development shots.

Baking tomorrow!

Wish me luck.

Capital Sketches

Some sketches for the capitals, Louis wanted me to create something based on the reference of Laon Cathedral but with some sci-fi elements. I may have gone a bit overboard with Sci-fi design language, however hopefully there should be enough variety to give Louis and Sam some ideas.

UDK Project is alive!

I have started a new UDK project setup and have a customized package system for the cathedral's assets!

Here is a little grab of the modular pieces in UDK.

Looking smooth... A lot more to go yet!

Scale Planning

Below is a placeholder scale dummy used to check the scale of the player with the environment pieces.
It will be implemented into UDK and used as a gauge to test whether the modular assets needs scaling before imported into UDK.

At the moment, trying to work towards the back of the insides of the cathedral's main corridor, this way the main bulk of the structure can be created by duplicating these modular assets.

Currently require to finish the capitals, top and bottom and the structural modular pieces of the inside corridors to the windows.

Modularity Test

Below is a quick compilation of modular assets using the generated textures...So far so good...

Need some nice capitals and columns to go with it :D

Texture Generation #2

Here is a rendition of the Stone_Slabs required for the modular pieces. It is very primitive but will work until further tweaking.

Base Mesh:

Sculpt Mesh:

Plane Bake:

Again, further work will be required to these before calling it final. The aim was to create two slab variants that tiled vertically so that they could be used for multiple applications within the modular pieces.

Test Application:

Next stop, clean stone and floor tiles!

Bricks are fixed and tiling... (with a minor discrepancy upon the vertical brick height tile, but some artists want to achieve that so I'll leave it :P)

On with the Stone_Slab texture generation!

Texture Generation #1

Here is the first iteration of the 'Stone_Brick' texture which will be used in the modular assets for the Cathedral's interior.

Base Mesh:

Sculpt Mesh:

Plane Bake:

Further work on this texture will require a diffuse composition (Sam Reynolds), clean the tiling of the normal map bake and the ambient occlusion map bake (Louis) until we are happy with the final results.

Next stop - Stone Slab texture generation.

Material Breakdown

Here is an image from the reference spread dissected to show the required tile-able textures for the cathedral's modular pieces!

Next up, texture generation!

Interior Reference

As part of the downsizing in scope, we have changed the desired outcome from full blown cathedral exterior and interior to just interior.

Here is a reference board for interior design:

 More soon!

Picking Up Where We Left Off

... It is 6th March. Due to an unfortunate event prior to the dissertation writing period we lost all of our work as shown in the initial presentation. As a result we have downsized the overall ambition/scope of the project to create an artistic show piece with evidence of learning new technology and principles. Progress will be posted here!
